Doing some research on the word, ‘hope’ in the Vine’s Expository Dictionary, I ran across this definition of ‘hope’ referring to ZOE, or eternal life, which is the present possession of those who have been born of the Spirit:
Titus 1:2; Titus 3:7, “the hope of eternal life,” i.e., the full manifestation and realization of that life which is already the believer’s possession.
Titus 1:1-3: “Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, 3 but at the proper time manifested, even His word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior.”
Titus 3:4-7: “But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
If you will notice, Vine states that eternal life, which is ALREADY in the believer’s possession, will come into full manifestation and realization. What you have now, through the new birth, will one day be extended to the physical body in resurrection. The body will put on immortality.
Eternal Life.

Vine’s Dictionary gives this as one of the definitions of ‘Zoe’….the God-kind of Life. This word: absolute has some fantastic meanings. Total. Complete. Utter. Fixed. Summing it up: life that is immovable! Today we will look at this aspect, this quality of Zoe, the God-kind of Life.

Zoe: Life as God has it in Himself that He gives to every true believer to have in themselves. Vine’s dictionary said this life becomes a principle for action in the believer. Principle: code, rule, standard, belief, attitude, opinion.
Today we will look at this life as a belief, (conviction, passion, assurance).

John 17:3
“And this is life eternal: to know thee, the only true God, and (to know) Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.”
Weymouth New Testament
And in this consists the Life of the Ages–in knowing Thee the only true God and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent.
Young’s Literal Translation
and this is the life age-during, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and him whom Thou didst send — Jesus Christ;
Aramaic Bible in Plain English (©2010)
“But these things are eternal life: ‘They shall know you, for you alone are The God of Truth, and Yeshua The Messiah whom you have sent.’ “
“Life” in this verse is the Greek word, “ZOE”, pronounced “ZOAAY”.
Strong’s Concordance #G2222.
Definitions:
1) life
a) the state of one who is possessed of vitality or is animate
b) every living soul
2) life
a) of the absolute fulness of life, both essential and ethical, which belongs to God, and through him both to the hypostatic “logos” and to Christ in whom the “logos” put on human nature
b) life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever.
In this picture, I see the hand of God, giving to us the gift of eternal life when we receive Jesus as our Savior. First John 5:11&12: “This is the record that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life, and he who has not the Son of God, hath not life.
The word, “eternal” in John 17:3, is the Greek word, “aionios”, from which we get our word, ‘eon’.
Strong’s concordance #G166.
Definitions:
1) without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be
2) without beginning
3) without end, never to cease, everlasting
If we combine these two definitions, we come up with:
“Life in the absolute sense, real, genuine, active, vigorous, which belongs to God, which He breathed into His Logos (Word), and which was manifest in the world when the Word took on flesh and dwelt among us. Of this life, we become partakers when we believe on the Son of God. At the resurrection, even our bodies shall be partakers of this life when they put on immortality.
This Life in the absolute sense, had no beginning and no end, it always has been and always will be, for it is the Life of the Eternally Existent One.”
If you have received the Son of God, you have received this life.
Assignment: make a personal confession out of the verses and definitions given….a profession of faith. Say it to yourself, about yourself and over yourself. You will ‘sense’ THAT Life rising up in you.
