The devil is an aggressor. Adam & Eve had a pleasant life in the Garden until he intruded on their world. There are three responses to aggression: agreement, appeasement, resistance. We are in the world we live in today because they practiced the first two, rather than the third.
To draw a modern day parallel, the nations of Europe throught they could agree with or appease Hitler, by the time they realized that they needed to resist him, he had gained a foothold that took millions of lives to dislodge.
Last week on the Zoe Radio Network, I shared a re-broadcast of an interview with Ray Comfort, author of a new book: “God, Hitler & The Bible”. In his book, he tells how Hitler came to power and the stealth with which he seduced the Church and people of Germany. Not only Ray Comfort, but many are seeing these same ‘wiles’ being used in political arenas today.
Pastor Erwin Lutzer, of the Moody Bible Church in Chicago, has written a book: “When A Nation Forgets God”. In it he talks about the German churches and their response to Hitler’s nationalizing the churches. Most agreed/appeased Hitler. “They were not equipping their members to STAND AGAINST the abuses that were developing around them.”
I have found in many years of ministry that Christians many times want to appease the devil rather than resist him. They don’t realize that appeasement means agreement. Eve agreed. Adam appeased. You must RESIST!
Ephesians 6:11: “hold your ground against the stratagems of the devil”, (Wuest).
