CHANGE….dramatic change, miraculous change….what causes such change to come about?
In my first post by this title, I referred to Nehemiah, King Xerxes cupbearer, and Israelite captive in the land of Persia. The Persians had conquered the land of Israel, carrying all the prominent, leadership-quality people off into captivity. The walls surrounding Jerusalem had been broken down and the gates of the city had been burnt with fire, leaving no protection for those left dwelling there. Nehemiah, through some visitors to the Persian capital, heard of the ‘great affliction and reproach’ that his fellow Israelites were in. The news ‘shook him to the core’.
A miraculous change was about to take place….because a man let himself be shaken to the very core of his being by the needs of others. Nehemiah had the one thing that he needed to see this change come about, a shaking that caused one cry to be heard in his heart: the cry for deliverance for his people.
The ‘calling of the soul’ is the cry that becomes the most important voice sounding inside of you. Even though Nehemiah was under orders not to appear in the King’s presence with a sad face, the ‘call’ of his brethren: “Come and help us”, became greater within him than the orders of the King.
We all have ‘certain sounds’ that play in our spirits and souls: God’s will, other people’s will, our will, fleshly voices, worldly voices, bosses, friends, family…..all are playing a sound inside us. One sound always seems to rise above the others.
Dr. Lake said in his sermon, “The Calling of the Soul”, ‘Politicians talk about a paramount issue. That is the isue that stands out by itself above all others. The soul has its paramount issue, and when the desire of your heart is intensified so that it absorbs all your energies, then the time of its fulfillment is not far away. That is the desire that brings the answer. It is creative desire.’
This is what Nehemiah had, he was shaken to the core with the forces of a creative desire. It is one thing to feel grief when you hear of a distressing situation, but when you are ‘shaken to the core’, there is a force that begins to move in your being that says: “I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.”
Dr. Lake produced the healthiest city in America, Spokane, WA, because he was shaken to the core by the affliction and reproach of people oppressed by sickness and disease, tormented in mind and body, broken financially. After seeing this ‘train of sickness’ carry away 8 of his own brothers and sisters, and nearly his wife, a great hatred stirred in him. That hatred turned to action, and sickness and disease began to flee in his presence.
Hebrews 1:9 states that Jesus ‘loved righteousness and hated iniquity’. There is a correlation between the hatred of evil and the manifestation of righteousness. When these two forces meet in the human spirit, a shaking begins that results in CHANGE, dramatic change, miraculous change.
